ARE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
RELEVANT TODAY?

We, at The-Iconoclast.org, absolutely believe that all of the commandments, statutes and ordinances that יְהֹוָה  [Yehovah] gave to the children of Yisrael are still relevant to us today.

It is our sincere desire that all who visit The-Iconoclast.org, likewise share, or will come to share, in that belief and in the wealth of that knowledge and understanding!

Moreover, as you will find by reading the introduction section below ("Leningrad Codex, Deuteronomy Chapter 5"), we believe that the Masoretes purposefully set Deuteronomy 5 in the precise order that יְהֹוָה  [Yehovah] intended!

Therefore, as a preface to the introduction, we want to set this stage by quoting the first two verses from Psalms 1, emphasizing that meditating on the Torah, of which no doubt the TEN COMMANDMENTS of Deuteronomy 5 represents, especially in the order given us in The Leningrad Codex, is most certainly of significant RELEVANCE for us today!

Psalms 1:1-2
"...And on his Torah doth he meditate day and night."

א

1

Happy is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the wicked, {N} nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful.

ב

2

But his delight is in the Torah of Yehovah; and in His Torah doth he meditate day and night.

Leningrad Codex, Deuteronomy Chapter 5

Note that in the original Leningrad Codex, a "Sof Pasuq" (looks like a colon (:)) is what the Masoretes used to designate the end of a verse.

In Deuteronomy 5, below, where we show verse images from the facsimile Leningrad Codex, we believe we have captured those verse endings just as they appear in the actual Codex itself.

Moreover, in The-Iconoclast.org Leningrad Codex Hebrew – JPS 1917 English Tanakh, we have likewise attempted to set the Hebrew and the English texts to match the Masoretic verse separations of the Leningrad Codex for Deuteronomy 5.

As of September, 2019, we know of no other published representations of Deuteronomy, Chapter 5, where the verses are set to follow the actual Leningrad Codex!

Please note that, below, we have taken Deuteronomy, Chapter 5, and modified it to add the image of each verse from the facsimile (it is called "facsimile" because it is not the "original", but rather a photographic copy of it!) pdf version of the Leningrad Codex side–by–side the regular Web–Hebrew text (some of the verses, from the Leningrad Codex itself, actually break over different columns in the original document, so we have placed those instances side–by–side).

We are hopeful that all who view this page will be able to discern that the Masoretes fully intended each verse to be separated in this manner, even though the great majority of "moderns" have chosen to represent it differently, even suggesting that they have "strictly" followed the Masoretic text!

It is our sincere desire that יְהֹוָה  [YehoVah] is honored and glorified by this present work, and that of The-Iconoclast's online Westminster Leningrad Codex based Hebrew – JPS 1917 based English Scriptures.

Moreover, we hope that all are truly blessed who visit The-Iconoclast.org website!

Deuteronomy 5

Be it known that the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Leningrad Codex, has different verse "sectionings" (breaks) than any "Bible" which "has the audicity" to claim it as its source!

As a matter of fact (regarding Deuteronomy 5):

  • In the actual Leningrad Codex there are 31 verses in Deuteronomy 5!
  • The Jewish Publication Society version from 1917 (JPS 1917) contains 29 verses.
  • The King James Version contains 33 verses for that same chapter.
DOES THIS MATTER?

Obviously, everyone can decide that for themselves!

However, you might just come to understand that the Masoretes knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they separated the verses of Deuteronomy 5!

Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's wife; {S} neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's. {S}
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders; Neither shalt thou steal.
5:20
These words Yehovah spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, and it went on no more. And He wrote them upon two tables of stone, and gave them unto me.
and ye said: 'Behold, the LORD our God hath shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire; we have seen this day that God doth speak with man, and he liveth. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
5:21
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain did burn with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
5:22

and ye said: 'Behold, Yehovah our God hath shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire; we have seen this day that God doth speak with man, and he liveth.
For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
5:23
Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of Yehovah our God any more, then we shall die.
Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God may say; and thou shalt speak unto us all that the LORD our God may speak unto thee; and we will hear it and do it.'
And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
5:24
For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spoke unto me; and the LORD said unto me: 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee; they have well said all that they have spoken. And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
5:25
Go thou near, and hear all that Yehovah our God may say; and thou shalt speak unto us all that Yehovah our God may speak unto thee; and we will hear it and do it.'
Oh that they had such a heart as this alway, to fear Me, and keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.
5:26
And Yehovah heard the voice of your words, when ye spoke unto me; and Yehovah said unto me: 'I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee; they have well said all that they have spoken.
Go say to them: Return ye to your tents. For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
5:27
Oh that they had such a heart as this alway, to fear Me, and keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
But as for thee, stand thou here by Me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.' Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
5:28
Go say to them: Return ye to your tents.
Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
5:29

But as for thee, stand thou here by Me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.'
Ye shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess. O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
5:30
Ye shall observe to do therefore as Yehovah your God hath commanded you; ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.
5:31
Ye shall walk in all the way which Yehovah your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
5:32 Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
5:33 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
