Chapter 1

דברי עמוס אשר־היה בנקדים מתקוע אשר חזה על־ישראל בימי ׀ עזיה מלך־יהודה ובימי ירבעם בן־יואש מלך ישראל שנתים לפני הרעש׃	א	1	The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
ויאמר ׀ יהוה מציון ישאג ומירושלם יתן קולו ואבלו נאות הרעים ויבש ראש הכרמל׃ פ	ב	2	And he said: Yehovah roareth from Zion, and uttereth His voice from Yerushalam; and the pastures of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי דמשק ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־דושם בחרצות הברזל את־הגלעד׃	ג	3	For thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Damascus, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they have threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.
ושלחתי אש בבית חזאל ואכלה ארמנות בן־הדד׃	ד	4	So will I send a fire into the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad;
ושברתי בריח דמשק והכרתי יושב מבקעת־און ותומך שבט מבית עדן וגלו עם־ארם קירה אמר יהוה׃ פ	ה	5	And I will break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from Bikath-Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Beth-eden; and the people of Aram shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith Yehovah. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי עזה ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־הגלותם גלות שלמה להסגיר לאדום׃	ו	6	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they carried away captive a whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom.
ושלחתי אש בחומת עזה ואכלה ארמנתיה׃	ז	7	So will I send a fire on the wall of Gaza, and it shall devour the palaces thereof;
והכרתי יושב מאשדוד ותומך שבט מאשקלון והשיבותי ידי על־עקרון ואבדו שארית פלשתים אמר אדני יהוה׃ פ	ח	8	And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon; and I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi]. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי־צר ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־הסגירם גלות שלמה לאדום ולא זכרו ברית אחים׃	ט	9	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they delivered up a whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant.
ושלחתי אש בחומת צר ואכלה ארמנתיה׃ פ	י	10	So will I send a fire on the wall of Tyre, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי אדום ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־רדפו בחרב אחיו ושחת רחמיו ויטרף לעד אפו ועברתו שמרה נצח׃	יא	11	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.
ושלחתי אש בתימן ואכלה ארמנות בצרה׃ פ	יב	12	So will I send a fire upon Teman, and it shall devour the palaces of Bozrah. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי בני־עמון ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־בקעם הרות הגלעד למען הרחיב את־גבולם׃	יג	13	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border.
והצתי אש בחומת רבה ואכלה ארמנותיה בתרועה ביום מלחמה בסער ביום סופה	יד	14	So will I kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
והלך מלכם בגולה הוא ושריו יחדו אמר יהוה׃ פ	יה	15	And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, saith Yehovah. {P}

Chapter 2

כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי מואב ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־שרפו עצמות מלך־אדום לשיד׃	א	1	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Moab, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.
ושלחתי־אש במואב ואכלה ארמנות הקריות ומת בשאון מואב בתרועה בקול שופר׃	ב	2	So will I send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the horn;
והכרתי שופט מקרבה וכל־שריה אהרוג עמו אמר יהוה׃ פ	ג	3	And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith Yehovah. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי יהודה ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־מאסם את־תורת יהוה וחקיו לא שמרו ויתעום כזביהם אשר־הלכו אבותם אחריהם׃	ד	4	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they have rejected the Torah of Yehovah, and have not kept His statutes, and their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers did walk.
ושלחתי אש ביהודה ואכלה ארמנות ירושלם׃ פ	ה	5	So will I send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Yerushalam. {P}
כה אמר יהוה על־שלשה פשעי ישראל ועל־ארבעה לא אשיבנו על־מכרם בכסף צדיק ואביון בעבור נעלים׃	ו	6	Thus saith Yehovah: For three transgressions of Israel, yea, for four, I will not reverse it: because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes;
השאפים על־עפר־ארץ בראש דלים ודרך ענוים יטו ואיש ואביו ילכו אל־הנערה למען חלל את־שם קדשי׃	ז	7	That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the humble; and a man and his father go unto the same maid, to profane My holy name;
ועל־בגדים חבלים יטו אצל כל־מזבח ויין ענושים ישתו בית אלהיהם׃	ח	8	And they lay themselves down beside every altar upon clothes taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of them that have been fined.
ואנכי השמדתי את־האמרי מפניהם אשר כגבה ארזים גבהו וחסן הוא כאלונים ואשמיד פריו ממעל ושרשיו מתחת׃	ט	9	Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
ואנכי העליתי אתכם מארץ מצרים ואולך אתכם במדבר ארבעים שנה לרשת את־ארץ האמרי׃	י	10	Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorites.
ואקים מבניכם לנביאים ומבחוריכם לנזרים האף אין־זאת בני ישראל נאם־יהוה׃	יא	11	And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith Yehovah.
ותשקו את־הנזרים יין ועל־הנביאים צויתם לאמר לא תנבאו׃	יב	12	But ye gave the Nazirites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying: 'Prophesy not.'
הנה אנכי מעיק תחתיכם כאשר תעיק העגלה המלאה לה עמיר׃	יג	13	Behold, I will make it creak under you, as a cart creaketh that is full of sheaves.
ואבד מנוס מקל וחזק לא־יאמץ כחו וגבור לא־ימלט נפשו׃	יד	14	And flight shall fail the swift, and the strong shall not exert his strength, neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
ותפש הקשת לא יעמד וקל ברגליו לא ימלט ורכב הסוס לא ימלט נפשו׃	יה	15	Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself;
ואמיץ לבו בגבורים ערום ינוס ביום־ההוא נאם־יהוה׃ פ	יו	16	And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith Yehovah. {P}

Chapter 3

שמעו את־הדבר הזה אשר דבר יהוה עליכם בני ישראל על כל־המשפחה אשר העליתי מארץ מצרים לאמר׃	א	1	Hear this word that Yehovah hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:
רק אתכם ידעתי מכל משפחות האדמה על־כן אפקד עליכם את כל־עונתיכם׃	ב	2	You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will visit upon you all your iniquities.
הילכו שנים יחדו בלתי אם־נועדו׃	ג	3	Will two walk together, except they have agreed?
הישאג אריה ביער וטרף אין לו היתן כפיר קולו ממענתו בלתי אם־לכד׃	ד	4	Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? Will a young lion give forth his voice out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
התפל צפור על־פח הארץ ומוקש אין לה היעלה־פח מן־האדמה ולכוד לא ילכוד׃	ה	5	Will a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where there is no lure for it? Will a snare spring up from the ground, and have taken nothing at all?
אם־יתקע שופר בעיר ועם לא יחרדו אם־תהיה רעה בעיר ויהוה לא עשה׃	ו	6	Shall the horn be blown in a city, and the people not tremble? Shall evil befall a city, and Yehovah hath not done it?
כי לא יעשה אדני יהוה דבר כי אם־גלה סודו אל־עבדיו הנביאים׃	ז	7	For the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi] will do nothing, but He revealeth His counsel unto His servants the prophets.
אריה שאג מי לא יירא אדני יהוה דבר מי לא ינבא׃	ח	8	The lion hath roared, who will not fear? The Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi] hath spoken, who can but prophesy?
השמיעו על־ארמנות באשדוד ועל־ארמנות בארץ מצרים ואמרו האספו על־הרי שמרון וראו מהומת רבות בתוכה ועשוקים בקרבה׃	ט	9	Proclaim it upon the palaces at Ashdod, and upon the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: 'Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great confusions therein, and the oppressions in the midst thereof.'
ולא־ידעו עשות־נכחה נאם־יהוה האוצרים חמס ושד בארמנותיהם׃ פ	י	10	For they know not to do right, saith Yehovah, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces. {P}
לכן כה אמר אדני יהוה צר וסביב הארץ והורד ממך עזך ונבזו ארמנותיך׃	יא	11	Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi]: An adversary, even round about the land! And he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and thy palaces shall be spoiled.
כה אמר יהוה כאשר יציל הרעה מפי הארי שתי כרעים או בדל־אזן כן ינצלו בני ישראל הישבים בשמרון בפאת מטה ובדמשק ערש׃	יב	12	Thus saith Yehovah: As the shepherd rescueth out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel that dwell in Samaria escape with the corner of a couch, and the leg of a bed.
שמעו והעידו בבית יעקב נאם־אדני יהוה אלהי הצבאות׃	יג	13	Hear ye, and testify against the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi], the God of hosts.
כי ביום פקדי פשעי־ישראל עליו ופקדתי על־מזבחות בית־אל ונגדעו קרנות המזבח ונפלו לארץ׃	יד	14	For in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him, I will also punish the altars of Beth-el, and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
והכיתי בית־החרף על־בית הקיץ ואבדו בתי השן וספו בתים רבים נאם־יהוה׃ ס	יה	15	And I will smite the winter-house with the summer-house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith Yehovah. {S}

Chapter 4

שמעו הדבר הזה פרות הבשן אשר בהר שמרון העשקות דלים הרצצות אביונים האמרת לאדניהם הביאה ונשתה׃	א	1	Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords: 'Bring, that we may feast.'
נשבע אדני יהוה בקדשו כי הנה ימים באים עליכם ונשא אתכם בצנות ואחריתכן בסירות דוגה׃	ב	2	The Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi] hath sworn by His holiness: Lo, surely the days shall come upon you, that ye shall be taken away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks.
ופרצים תצאנה אשה נגדה והשלכתנה ההרמונה נאם־יהוה׃	ג	3	And ye shall go out at the breaches, every one straight before her; and ye shall be cast into Harmon, saith Yehovah.
באו בית־אל ופשעו הגלגל הרבו לפשע והביאו לבקר זבחיכם לשלשת ימים מעשרתיכם׃	ד	4	Come to Beth-el, and transgress, to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices in the morning, and your tithes after three days;
וקטר מחמץ תודה וקראו נדבות השמיעו כי כן אהבתם בני ישראל נאם אדני יהוה׃	ה	5	And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, and proclaim freewill-offerings and publish them; for so ye love to do, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi].
וגם־אני נתתי לכם נקיון שנים בכל־עריכם וחסר לחם בכל מקומתיכם ולא־שבתם עדי נאם־יהוה׃	ו	6	And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places; yet have ye not returned unto Me, saith Yehovah.
וגם אנכי מנעתי מכם את־הגשם בעוד שלשה חדשים לקציר והמטרתי על־עיר אחת ועל־עיר אחת לא אמטיר חלקה אחת תמטר וחלקה אשר־לא־תמטיר עליה תיבש׃	ז	7	And I also have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest; and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city; one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.
ונעו שתים שלש ערים אל־עיר אחת לשתות מים ולא ישבעו ולא־שבתם עדי נאם־יהוה׃	ח	8	So two or three cities wandered unto one city to drink water, and were not satisfied; yet have ye not returned unto Me, saith Yehovah.
הכיתי אתכם בשדפון ובירקון הרבות גנותיכם וכרמיכם ותאניכם וזיתיכם יאכל הגזם ולא־שבתם עדי נאם־יהוה׃ ס	ט	9	I have smitten you with blasting and mildew; the multitude of your gardens and your vineyards and your fig-trees and your olive-trees hath the palmer-worm devoured; yet have ye not returned unto Me, saith Yehovah. {S}
שלחתי בכם דבר בדרך מצרים הרגתי בחרב בחוריכם עם שבי סוסיכם ואעלה באש מחניכם ובאפכם ולא־שבתם עדי נאם־יהוה׃	י	10	I have sent among you the pestilence in the way of Egypt; your young men have I slain with the sword, and have carried away your horses; and I have made the stench of your camp to come up even into your nostrils; yet have ye not returned unto Me, saith Yehovah.
הפכתי בכם כמהפכת אלהים את־סדם ואת־עמרה ותהיו כאוד מצל משרפה ולא־שבתם עדי נאם־יהוה׃ ס	יא	11	I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a brand plucked out of the burning; yet have ye not returned unto Me, saith Yehovah.
לכן כה אעשה־לך ישראל עקב כי־זאת אעשה־לך הכון לקראת־אלהיך ישראל׃	יב	12	Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel; because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
כי הנה יוצר הרים וברא רוח ומגיד לאדם מה־שחו עשה שחר עיפה ודרך על־במתי ארץ יהוה אלהי־צבאות שמו׃ ס	יג	13	For, lo, He that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth; Yehovah, the God of hosts, is His name. {P}

Chapter 5

שמעו את־הדבר הזה אשר אנכי נשא עליכם קינה בית ישראל׃	א	1	Hear ye this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel:
נפלה לא־תוסיף קום בתולת ישראל נטשה על־אדמתה אין מקימה׃	ב	2	The virgin of Israel is fallen, she shall no more rise; she is cast down upon her land, there is none to raise her up.
כי כה אמר אדני יהוה העיר היצאת אלף תשאיר מאה והיוצאת מאה תשאיר עשרה לבית ישראל׃ ס	ג	3	For thus saith the Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi]: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, of the house of Israel.
כי כה אמר יהוה לבית ישראל דרשוני וחיו׃	ד	4	For thus saith Yehovah unto the house of Israel: Seek ye Me, and live;
ואל־תדרשו בית־אל והגלגל לא תבאו ובאר שבע לא תעברו כי הגלגל גלה יגלה ובית־אל יהיה לאון׃	ה	5	But seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall come to nought.
דרשו את־יהוה וחיו פן־יצלח כאש בית יוסף ואכלה ואין־מכבה לבית־אל׃	ו	6	Seek Yehovah, and live--lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, and there be none to quench it in Bethel--
ההפכים ללענה משפט וצדקה לארץ הניחו׃	ז	7	Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast righteousness to the ground;
עשה כימה וכסיל והפך לבקר צלמות ויום לילה החשיך הקורא למי־הים וישפכם על־פני הארץ יהוה שמו׃ ס	ח	8	Him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and bringeth on great darkness in the morning, and darkeneth the day into night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth; Yehovah is His name;
המבליג שד על־עז ושד על־מבצר יבוא׃	ט	9	That causeth destruction to flash upon the strong, so that destruction cometh upon the fortress.
שנאו בשער מוכיח ודבר תמים יתעבו׃	י	10	They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
לכן יען בושסכם על־דל ומשאת־בר תקחו ממנו בתי גזית בניתם ולא־תשבו בם כרמי־חמד נטעתם ולא תשתו את־יינם׃	יא	11	Therefore, because ye trample upon the poor, and take from him exactions of wheat; ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them, ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine thereof.
כי ידעתי רבים פשעיכם ועצמים חטאתיכם צררי צדיק לקחי כפר ואביונים בשער הטו׃	יב	12	For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins; ye that afflict the just, that take a ransom, and that turn aside the needy in the gate.
לכן המשכיל בעת ההיא ידם כי עת רעה היא׃	יג	13	Therefore the prudent doth keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.
דרשו־טוב ואל־רע למען תחיו ויהי־כן יהוה אלהי־צבאות אתכם כאשר אמרתם׃	יד	14	Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Yehovah, the God of hosts, will be with you, as ye say.
שנאו־רע ואהבו טוב והציגו בשער משפט אולי יחנן יהוה אלהי־צבאות שארית יוסף׃ ס	יה	15	Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that Yehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph. {S}
לכן כה־אמר יהוה אלהי צבאות אדני בכל־רחבות מספד ובכל־חוצות יאמרו הו־הו וקראו אכר אל־אבל ומספד אל־יודעי נהי׃	יו	16	Therefore thus saith Yehovah, the God of hosts, the Lord: Lamentation shall be in all the broad places, and they shall say in all the streets: 'Alas! alas!' and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and proclaim lamentation to such as are skilful of wailing.
ובכל־כרמים מספד כי־אעבר בקרבך אמר יהוה׃ ס	יז	17	And in all vineyards shall be lamentation; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Yehovah. {P}
הוי המתאוים את־יום יהוה למה־זה לכם יום יהוה הוא־חשך ולא־אור׃	יח	18	Woe unto you that desire the day of Yehovah! Wherefore would ye have the day of Yehovah? It is darkness, and not light.
כאשר ינוס איש מפני הארי ופגעו הדב ובא הבית וסמך ידו על־הקיר ונשכו הנחש׃	יט	19	As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; and went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
הלא־חשך יום יהוה ולא־אור ואפל ולא־נגה לו׃	כ	20	Shall not the day of Yehovah be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?
שנאתי מאסתי חגיכם ולא אריח בעצרתיכם׃	כא	21	I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
כי אם־תעלו־לי עלות ומנחתיכם לא ארצה ושלם מריאיכם לא אביט׃	כב	22	Yea, though ye offer me burnt-offerings and your meal-offerings, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts.
הסר מעלי המון שריך וזמרת נבליך לא אשמע׃	כג	23	Take thou away from Me the noise of thy songs; and let Me not hear the melody of thy psalteries.
ויגל כמים משפט וצדקה כנחל איתן׃	כד	24	But let justice well up as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
הזבחים ומנחה הגשתם־לי במדבר ארבעים שנה בית ישראל׃	כה	25	Did ye bring unto Me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
ונשאתם את סכות מלככם ואת כיון צלמיכם כוכב אלהיכם אשר עשיתם לכם׃	כו	26	So shall ye take up Siccuth your king and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
והגליתי אתכם מהלאה לדמשק אמר יהוה אלהי־צבאות שמו׃ פ	כז	27	Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith He, whose name is Yehovah God of hosts. {P}

Chapter 6

הוי השאננים בציון והבטחים בהר שמרון נקבי ראשית הגוים ובאו להם בית ישראל׃	א	1	Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and to them that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come!
עברו כלנה וראו ולכו משם חמת רבה ורדו גת־פלשתים הטובים מן־הממלכות האלה אם־רב גבולם מגבלכם׃	ב	2	Pass ye unto Calneh, and see, and from thence go ye to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines; are they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border?
המנדים ליום רע ותגישון שבת חמס׃	ג	3	Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

QERE — KETIV
(What is Read —What is Written) :

Qere and Ketiv, from the Aramaic qere or q're, קְרֵי‎ ("[what is] read") and ketiv, or ketib, kethib, kethibh, kethiv, כְּתִיב‎ ("[what is] written"), also known as "keri uchesiv" or "keri uchetiv," refers to a system for marking differences between what is written in the consonantal text of the Hebrew Bible, as preserved by scribal tradition, and what is read. In such situations, the Qere is the technical orthographic device used to indicate the pronunciation of the words in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew language scriptures (Tanakh), while the Ketiv indicates their written form, as inherited from tradition.

A. Qere and Ketiv are orthographic devices that were used by the Masoretes,
i.e., Jewish scribes from the 6-10th centuries.

Qere means, "what is read," and ketiv means, "what is written".

It is found in existing Masoretic manuscripts dating to the 9th and 10th centuries, CE.

There are several forms of Qere / Ketiv, including:
ordinary, vowel, omitted, added, euphemistic, split, and qere perpetuum.

The ketiv that is most relevant is the vowel qere. In this case, the consonants are unchanged,
but different vowel signs are added and only the qere, i.e., what is read, is vocalized. ...

I Challenge The Rabbinic QERE–KETIV System!

In January 2022, beginning with the "Accented" (Full Trop and Vowels), rendering I chose to repair defects in the html encodings which occurred with my mechanical conversion of the unicode multi-wide encoding from http://tanach.us. I also decided to rearrange the Qere–Ketiv "system" with what I consider was the Masoretic intent in the first place!

The New KETIV–qere Hebrew Rendering (ACCENTS)!

Thus, this current version uses the Ketiv, what is written, as the predominant rendering, while making the Qere, what the "rabbis" have commanded as Must Be Read instead, to be a minimalist secondary format (much as rabbis appear to have intended the Ketiv to be!).

One of the reasons I decided to take on this new rendering effort is that in my efforts to understand the nature of the rabbinic Qere–Ketiv system I have not truly found a satisfactory explanation of why the "Qere" should always take precedence over the "Ketiv" in reading the Tanakh.

In fact, as I understand it, rabbinic "scribes", in examining the actual Aleppo and Leningrad Codices, appear to have taken upon themselves to adding the consonant only Qere in the margins upon the original manuscripts, where, in their "infinite wisdom" they have presumed themselves to be the greater authority!

Moreover, as rabbinic sources seem to indicate that the "Ketiv" should never be uttered, I have found instances, such as in Exodus 21:8, where I believe the "Qere" is blatantly INCORRECT — and that the "Ketiv" should be the preferred "reading", as if the Masoretes actually knew what they were doing all along!

In my own regular reading (Stone Edition Tanakh, Koren Publications Tanakh), my preference has been to read the "Ketiv" (what is written) and pretty much minimize the "Qere"! This is not easy to do because the predominant Qere is rendered as if it is the normative form, and the Ketiv follows, typically within brackets, as if it is the offensive variant (Stone Edition Tanakh)! In the Koren Publications Tanakh, the "Ketiv" is what is rendered in the margin, while the "Qere" is found in the regular text! Obviously, normal reading will typically ignore what the Masoretes wrote, the "Ketiv"!

As of January, 2022, and going forward, I intend to render the rabbinic additions of Qere in their current KETIV–qere form found in the accented version. I consider this as to convey the intent of the Masoretes. However, I acknowledge that rabbis (talmudists) have expended much effort to obscure the written Torah as part of their regular practice; as they appear, to me, to view themselves collectively as אֱלֹהִ֔ים Elohim. That is, I believe that those talmudists (rabbis), consider themselves collectively to be God!!! They certainly demand that their edicts (tachanot) are followed as if they are divinely inspired law!

The Hebrew Phrase הָאָדֹ֥ן ׀ יְהוָֽה Occurs In Only Two Places, In Exodus 23:17 and 34:23. In Those Cases, I Have Changed The Translation Wording From "Lord GOD" To "Lord GOD [ha Adon Yehovah]".

אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה Adonai Yehovi

Typically Translated As "Lord GOD", It Is A Much Less Common Form Of The Divine Name, יְהֹוָה [Yehovah].

This Form אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה Is, Nevertheless, Quite Important In Understanding Pronounciation For The Divine Name, Especially Since The Hebrew Form For It Has NOT Undergone The Intense Scrutiny Of rabbinic Censorship As Has "Yehovah". Accordingly, The Hebrew Text For This Form Of 'The Name' Typically HAS NOT BEEN ALTERED In Jewish Publications That Actually Keep The Vowel Pointers From The Masoretic Text!

The Word "Jerusalem" (the name of capital city in ancient Israel), As Found In The JPS 1917, Has Been Changed To Its Transliterated Equivalent, "Yerushalam" (note the 'am' ending), In All Places Where It Corresponds To [ יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם ] In The Hebrew Text.

יְרוּשְׁלֶֽם "Yerush'lem"

A Rare, Second Transliterated Form, "Yerush'lem" (note the 'em' ending), Has Been Changed From "Jerusalem" Where The Hebrew Letters Spell Out The Aramaic Form [ יְרוּשְׁלֶֽם ] Found In Aramaic Parts Of Daniel And Ezra.

ירוּשָׁלַ֙יִם֙ "Yerushalayim"

The Extremely Rare, Third Transliterated Form, "Yerushalayim" (note the 'ayim' ending), Has Been Changed From The JPS 1917 "Jerusalem" To Correspond To The Hebrew [ ירוּשָׁלַ֙יִם֙ ].

Noteworthy Is That This Rarest Form Appears In Only Four (4) Places In The Entire Hebrew Scriptures, Yet, It Is The Most Common Pronunciation For The Name Of The Ancient City! Its Four (Out Of Over 600) Appearances Are:
1) Jeremiah 26:18, 2) Esther 2:6, 3) I Chronicles 3:5, and 4) II Chronicles 25:1.
