Chapter 1

ובשנת אחת לכורש מלך פרס לכלות דבר־יהוה מפי ירמיה העיר יהוה את־רוח כרש מלך־פרס ויעבר־קול בכל־מלכותו וגם־במכתב לאמר׃	א	1	Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of Yehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Yehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying:
כה אמר כרש מלך פרס כל ממלכות הארץ נתן לי יהוה אלהי השמים והוא־פקד עלי לבנות־לו בית בירושלם אשר ביהודה׃	ב	2	'Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth hath Yehovah, the God of heaven, given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Yerushalam, which is in Judah.
מי־בכם מכל־עמו יהי אלהיו עמו ויעל לירושלם אשר ביהודה ויבן את־בית יהוה אלהי ישראל הוא האלהים אשר בירושלם׃	ג	3	Whosoever there is among you of all His people--his God be with him--let him go up to Yerushalam, which is in Judah, and build the house of Yehovah, the God of Israel, He is the God who is in Yerushalam.
וכל־הנשאר מכל־המקמות אשר הוא גר־שם ינשאוהו אנשי מקמו בכסף ובזהב וברכוש ובבהמה עם־הנדבה לבית האלהים אשר בירושלם׃	ד	4	And whosoever is left, in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill-offering for the house of God which is in Yerushalam.'
ויקומו ראשי האבות ליהודה ובנימן והכהנים והלוים לכל העיר האלהים את־רוחו לעלות לבנות את־בית יהוה אשר בירושלם׃	ה	5	Then rose up the heads of fathers' houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, even all whose spirit God had stirred to go up to build the house of Yehovah which is in Yerushalam.
וכל־סביבתיהם חזקו בידיהם בכלי־כסף בזהב ברכוש ובבהמה ובמגדנות לבד על־כל־התנדב׃ ס	ו	6	And all they that were round about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered. {S}
והמלך כורש הוציא את־כלי בית־יהוה אשר הוציא נבוכדנצר מירושלם ויתנם בבית אלהיו׃	ז	7	Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of Yehovah, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Yerushalam, and had put them in the house of his gods;
ויוציאם כורש מלך פרס על־יד מתרדת הגזבר ויספרם לששבצר הנשיא ליהודה׃	ח	8	even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.
ואלה מספרם אגרטלי זהב שלשים אגרטלי־כסף אלף מחלפים תשעה ועשרים׃ ס	ט	9	And this is the number of them: thirty basins of gold, a thousand basins of silver, nine and twenty knives; {S}
כפורי זהב שלשים כפורי כסף משנים ארבע מאות ועשרה כלים אחרים אלף׃ ס	י	10	thirty bowls of gold, {S} silver bowls of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand. {S}
כל־כלים לזהב ולכסף חמשת אלפים וארבע מאות הכל העלה ששבצר עם העלות הגולה מבבל לירושלם׃ פ	יא	11	All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up, when they of the captivity were brought up from Babylon unto Yerushalam. {P}

ואלה ׀ בני המדינה העלים משבי הגולה אשר הגלה נבוכדנצר נבוכדנצור מלך־בבל לבבל וישובו לירושלם ויהודה איש לעירו׃	א	1	Now these are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and that returned unto Yerushalam and Judah, every one unto his city;

בני־לבנה בני־חגבה בני עקוב׃	מה	45	the children of Lebanah, the children of Hagabah, the children of Akkub;
בני־חגב בני־שלמי שמלי בני חנן׃	מו	46	the children of Hagab, the children of Salmai, the children of Hanan;
בני־גדל בני־גחר בני ראיה׃	מז	47	the children of Giddel, the children of Gahar, the children of Reaiah;

בני עבדי שלמה בני־סטי בני־הספרת בני פרודא׃	נה	55	The children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Hassophereth, the children of Peruda;
בני־יעלה בני־דרקון בני גדל׃	נו	56	the children of Jaalah, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel;
בני שפטיה בני־חטיל בני פכרת הצביים בני אמי׃	נז	57	the children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth-hazzebaim, the children of Ami.
כל־הנתינים ובני עבדי שלמה שלש מאות תשעים ושנים׃ ס	נח	58	All the Nethinim, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety and two. {S}
ואלה העלים מתל מלח תל חרשא כרוב אדן אמר ולא יכלו להגיד בית־אבותם וזרעם אם מישראל הם׃	נט	59	And these were they that went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer; but they could not tell their fathers' houses, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
בני־דליה בני־טוביה בני נקודא שש מאות חמשים ושנים׃ ס	ס	60	the children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred fifty and two. {S}
ומבני הכהנים בני חביה בני הקוץ בני ברזלי אשר לקח מבנות ברזלי הגלעדי אשה ויקרא על־שמם׃	סא	61	And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.
אלה בקשו כתבם המתיחשים ולא נמצאו ויגאלו מן־הכהנה׃	סב	62	These sought their register, that is, the genealogy, but it was not found; therefore were they deemed polluted and put from the priesthood.
ויאמר התרשתא להם אשר לא־יאכלו מקדש הקדשים עד עמד כהן לאורים ולתמים׃	סג	63	And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim.
כל־הקהל כאחד ארבע רבוא אלפים שלש־מאות ששים׃	סד	64	The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and sixty,
מלבד עבדיהם ואמהתיהם אלה שבעת אלפים שלש מאות שלשים ושבעה ולהם משררים ומשררות מאתים׃	סה	65	beside their men-servants and their maid-servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven; and they had two hundred singing men and singing women.
סוסיהם שבע מאות שלשים וששה פרדיהם מאתים ארבעים וחמשה׃	סו	66	Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five;
גמליהם ארבע מאות שלשים וחמשה חמרים ששת אלפים שבע מאות ועשרים׃ פ	סז	67	their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty. {P}
ומראשי האבות בבואם לבית יהוה אשר בירושלם התנדבו לבית האלהים להעמידו על־מכונו׃	סח	68	And some of the heads of fathers' houses, when they came to the house of Yehovah which is in Yerushalam, offered willingly for the house of God to set it up in its place;
ככחם נתנו לאוצר המלאכה זהב דרכמונים שש־רבאות ואלף ס וכסף מנים חמשת אלפים וכתנת כהנים מאה׃ ס	סט	69	they gave after their ability into the treasury of the work sixty-one thousand darics of gold, {S} and five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred priests' tunics. {S}
וישבו הכהנים והלוים ומן־העם והמשררים והשוערים והנתינים בעריהם וכל־ישראל בעריהם׃ ס	ע	70	So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities. {S}

Chapter 3

ויגע החדש השביעי ובני ישראל בערים ס ויאספו העם כאיש אחד אל־ירושלם׃ ס	א	1	And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, {S} the people gathered themselves together as one man to Yerushalam. {S}
ויקם ישוע בן־יוצדק ואחיו הכהנים וזרבבל בן־שאלתיאל ואחיו ויבנו את־מזבח אלהי ישראל להעלות עליו עלות ככתוב בתורת משה איש־האלהים׃	ב	2	Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt-offerings thereon, as it is written in the Torah of Moses the man of God.
ויכינו המזבח על־מכונתיו כי באימה עליהם מעמי הארצות ויעלו ויעל עליו עלות ליהוה עלות לבקר ולערב׃	ג	3	And they set the altar upon its bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of the countries, and they offered burnt-offerings thereon unto Yehovah, even burnt-offerings morning and evening.
ויעשו את־חג הסכות ככתוב ועלת יום ביום במספר כמשפט דבר־יום ביומו׃	ד	4	And they kept the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt-offerings by number, according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required;
ואחריכן עלת תמיד ולחדשים ולכל־מועדי יהוה המקדשים ולכל מתנדב נדבה ליהוה׃	ה	5	and afterward the continual burnt-offering, and the offerings of the new moons, and of all the appointed seasons of Yehovah that were hallowed, and of every one that willingly offered a freewill-offering unto Yehovah.
מיום אחד לחדש השביעי החלו להעלות עלות ליהוה והיכל יהוה לא יסד׃	ו	6	From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt-offerings unto Yehovah; but the foundation of the temple of Yehovah was not yet laid.
ויתנו־כסף לחצבים ולחרשים ומאכל ומשתה ושמן לצדנים ולצרים להביא עצי ארזים מן־הלבנון אל־ים יפוא כרשיון כורש מלך־פרס עליהם׃ פ	ז	7	They gave money also unto the hewers, and to the carpenters; and food, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar-trees from Lebanon to the sea, unto Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia. {P}
ובשנה השנית לבואם אל־בית האלהים לירושלם בחדש השני החלו זרבבל בן־שאלתיאל וישוע בן־יוצדק ושאר אחיהם ׀ הכהנים והלוים וכל־הבאים מהשבי ירושלם ויעמידו את־הלוים מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לנצח על־מלאכת בית־יהוה׃ פ	ח	8	Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Yerushalam, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Yerushalam; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to have the oversight of the work of the house of Yehovah. {P}
ויעמד ישוע בניו ואחיו קדמיאל ובניו בני־יהודה כאחד לנצח על־עשה המלאכה בבית האלהים ס בני חנדד בניהם ואחיהם הלוים׃	ט	9	Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, and Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to have the oversight of the workmen in the house of God; {S} the sons of Henadad also, with their sons and their brethren the Levites.
ויסדו הבנים את־היכל יהוה ויעמידו הכהנים מלבשים בחצצרות והלוים בני־אסף במצלתים להלל את־יהוה על־ידי דויד מלך־ישראל׃	י	10	And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Yehovah, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise Yehovah, according to the direction of David king of Israel.
ויענו בהלל ובהודת ליהוה כי טוב כי־לעולם חסדו על־ישראל וכל־העם הריעו תרועה גדולה בהלל ליהוה על הוסד בית־יהוה׃ ס	יא	11	And they sang one to another in praising and giving thanks unto Yehovah: 'for He is good, for His mercy endureth for ever toward Israel.' And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Yehovah, because the foundation of the house of Yehovah was laid. {S}
ורבים מהכהנים והלוים וראשי האבות הזקנים אשר ראו את־הבית הראשון ביסדו זה הבית בעיניהם בכים בקול גדול ורבים בתרועה בשמחה להרים קול׃	יב	12	But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, the old men that had seen the first house standing on its foundation, wept with a loud voice, when this house was before their eyes; and many shouted aloud for joy;
ואין העם מכירים קול תרועת השמחה לקול בכי העם כי העם מריעים תרועה גדולה והקול נשמע עד־למרחוק׃ פ	יג	13	so that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off. {P}

Chapter 4

וישמעו צרי יהודה ובנימן כי־בני הגולה בונים היכל ליהוה אלהי ישראל׃	א	1	Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto Yehovah, the God of Israel;
ויגשו אל־זרבבל ואל־ראשי האבות ויאמרו להם נבנה עמכם כי ככם נדרוש לאלהיכם ולו ולא ׀ אנחנו זבחים מימי אסר חדן מלך אשור המעלה אתנו פה׃	ב	2	then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' houses, and said unto them: 'Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.'
ויאמר להם זרבבל וישוע ושאר ראשי האבות לישראל לא־לכם ולנו לבנות בית לאלהינו כי אנחנו יחד נבנה ליהוה אלהי ישראל כאשר צונו המלך כורש מלך־פרס׃	ג	3	But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, said unto them: 'Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Yehovah, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.'
ויהי עם־הארץ מרפים ידי עם־יהודה ומבהלים ומבלהים אותם לבנות׃	ד	4	Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and harried them while they were building,
וסכרים עליהם יועצים להפר עצתם כל־ימי כורש מלך פרס ועד־מלכות דריוש מלך־פרס׃	ה	5	and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
ובמלכות אחשורוש בתחלת מלכותו כתבו שטנה על־ישבי יהודה וירושלם׃ ס	ו	6	And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Yerushalam. {S}
ובימי ארתחששתא כתב בשלם מתרדת טבאל ושאר כנותיו כנותו על־ארתחששת ארתחששתא מלך פרס וכתב הנשתון כתוב ארמית ומתרגם ארמית׃ פ	ז	7	And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Aramaic character, and set forth in the Aramaic tongue. {P}
רחום בעל־טעם ושמשי ספרא כתבו אגרה חדה על־ירושלם לארתחששתא מלכא כנמא׃	ח	8	Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Yerush'lem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort--
אדין רחום בעל־טעם ושמשי ספרא ושאר כנותהון דיניא ואפרסתכיא טרפליא אפרסיא ארכויא ארכוי בבליא שושנכיא דהיא דהוא עלמיא׃	ט	9	then wrote Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinites, and the Apharesattechites, the Tarpelites, the Apharesites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehites, the Elamites,

Chapter 9

וככלות אלה נגשו אלי השרים לאמר לא־נבדלו העם ישראל והכהנים והלוים מעמי הארצות כתועבתיהם לכנעני החתי הפרזי היבוסי העמני המאבי המצרי והאמרי׃	א	1	Now when these things were done, the princes drew near unto me, saying: 'The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

וכהתפלל עזרא וכהתודתו בכה ומתנפל לפני בית האלהים נקבצו אליו מישראל קהל רב־מאד אנשים ונשים וילדים כי־בכו העם הרבה־בכה׃ ס	א	1	Now while Ezra prayed, and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there was gathered together unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; for the people wept very sore. {S}

(What is Read —What is Written) :

Qere and Ketiv, from the Aramaic qere or q're, קְרֵי‎ ("[what is] read") and ketiv, or ketib, kethib, kethibh, kethiv, כְּתִיב‎ ("[what is] written"), also known as "keri uchesiv" or "keri uchetiv," refers to a system for marking differences between what is written in the consonantal text of the Hebrew Bible, as preserved by scribal tradition, and what is read. In such situations, the Qere is the technical orthographic device used to indicate the pronunciation of the words in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew language scriptures (Tanakh), while the Ketiv indicates their written form, as inherited from tradition.

A. Qere and Ketiv are orthographic devices that were used by the Masoretes,
i.e., Jewish scribes from the 6-10th centuries.

Qere means, "what is read," and ketiv means, "what is written".

It is found in existing Masoretic manuscripts dating to the 9th and 10th centuries, CE.

There are several forms of Qere / Ketiv, including:
ordinary, vowel, omitted, added, euphemistic, split, and qere perpetuum.

The ketiv that is most relevant is the vowel qere. In this case, the consonants are unchanged,
but different vowel signs are added and only the qere, i.e., what is read, is vocalized. ...

I Challenge The Rabbinic QERE–KETIV System!

In January 2022, beginning with the "Accented" (Full Trop and Vowels), rendering I chose to repair defects in the html encodings which occurred with my mechanical conversion of the unicode multi-wide encoding from http://tanach.us. I also decided to rearrange the Qere–Ketiv "system" with what I consider was the Masoretic intent in the first place!

The New KETIV–qere Hebrew Rendering (ACCENTS)!

Thus, this current version uses the Ketiv, what is written, as the predominant rendering, while making the Qere, what the "rabbis" have commanded as Must Be Read instead, to be a minimalist secondary format (much as rabbis appear to have intended the Ketiv to be!).

One of the reasons I decided to take on this new rendering effort is that in my efforts to understand the nature of the rabbinic Qere–Ketiv system I have not truly found a satisfactory explanation of why the "Qere" should always take precedence over the "Ketiv" in reading the Tanakh.

In fact, as I understand it, rabbinic "scribes", in examining the actual Aleppo and Leningrad Codices, appear to have taken upon themselves to adding the consonant only Qere in the margins upon the original manuscripts, where, in their "infinite wisdom" they have presumed themselves to be the greater authority!

Moreover, as rabbinic sources seem to indicate that the "Ketiv" should never be uttered, I have found instances, such as in Exodus 21:8, where I believe the "Qere" is blatantly INCORRECT — and that the "Ketiv" should be the preferred "reading", as if the Masoretes actually knew what they were doing all along!

In my own regular reading (Stone Edition Tanakh, Koren Publications Tanakh), my preference has been to read the "Ketiv" (what is written) and pretty much minimize the "Qere"! This is not easy to do because the predominant Qere is rendered as if it is the normative form, and the Ketiv follows, typically within brackets, as if it is the offensive variant (Stone Edition Tanakh)! In the Koren Publications Tanakh, the "Ketiv" is what is rendered in the margin, while the "Qere" is found in the regular text! Obviously, normal reading will typically ignore what the Masoretes wrote, the "Ketiv"!

As of January, 2022, and going forward, I intend to render the rabbinic additions of Qere in their current KETIV–qere form found in the accented version. I consider this as to convey the intent of the Masoretes. However, I acknowledge that rabbis (talmudists) have expended much effort to obscure the written Torah as part of their regular practice; as they appear, to me, to view themselves collectively as אֱלֹהִ֔ים Elohim. That is, I believe that those talmudists (rabbis), consider themselves collectively to be God!!! They certainly demand that their edicts (tachanot) are followed as if they are divinely inspired law!

In Converting "LORD" to "Yehovah", I Counted A Total Of 5,553 Occurrences In The JPS 1917 Tanakh!

הָאָדֹ֥ן ׀ יְהוָֽה ha Adon Yehovah

The Hebrew Phrase הָאָדֹ֥ן ׀ יְהוָֽה Occurs In Only Two Places, In Exodus 23:17 and 34:23. In Those Cases, I Have Changed The Translation Wording From "Lord GOD" To "Lord GOD [ha Adon Yehovah]".

אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה Adonai Yehovi

Typically Translated As "Lord GOD", It Is A Much Less Common Form Of The Divine Name, יְהֹוָה [Yehovah].

This Form אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה Is, Nevertheless, Quite Important In Understanding Pronounciation For The Divine Name, Especially Since The Hebrew Form For It Has NOT Undergone The Intense Scrutiny Of rabbinic Censorship As Has "Yehovah". Accordingly, The Hebrew Text For This Form Of 'The Name' Typically HAS NOT BEEN ALTERED In Jewish Publications That Actually Keep The Vowel Pointers From The Masoretic Text!

In Converting "Lord GOD" to "Lord GOD [Adonai Yehovi]", I Counted A Total Of 284 Occurrences In The JPS 1917 Tanakh. Of All Of Its Occurrences, The Fully Voweled Form Of The Hebrew אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה Appears 31 Times, And The Non–Fully Voweled Form אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה (The Same Hebrew Letters, Minus Just The One 'Oh' Sounding Character, "The Holem", Which Follows The First 'He' In ( י 'Yud', ה 'He', ו 'Vav', ה 'He' ), Make Up All Other Occurrences.
